These files are Release 3.14.1 of TeX plus associated BibTeX and MF and release 5.47 of dvips. They have been organized to help (I hope) ease the pain of updating for new compiler/library releases. Files that are dependent on the library version in use have been moved into separate sub-directories as has the web/web2c source. dvips.doc.T.Z - documentation for dvips mf.lib.i.T.Z - support files for metafont that are independent of the binary version in use tex.lib.i.T.Z - support files for tex, latex, slitex and bibtex that are independent of the binary version in use texmf.man.T.Z - *.1 man pages for most of the programs OLD - obsolete versions (to be deleted in due course) GCC.2.2.2.version - files that are dependent on the GCC 2.2.2 shared libraries. Includes: texetc.bin.T.Z - binaries linked with gcc 2.2.2 shared libs: includes - bibtex, initex, virtex, inimf, virmf, mft, dvicopy, - dvitype, pktogf, pktype, vftovp, vptovf, gftodvi, - gftopk, gftype, patgen, pltotf, tftopl, pooltype, - tangle, weave, dvips tex.lib.d.T.Z - tex.pool and format files for tex, latex etc for the - above binaries mf.lib.d.T.Z - metafont lib files for the above binaries mfnoX.T.Z - metafont binaries without X support Jump.4.1.version - files that are dependent on the version 4.1 jump libraries. Includes: texetc.bin.T.Z - binaries linked with version 4.1 jump libs: includes - bibtex, initex, virtex, inimf, virmf, mft, dvicopy, - dvitype, pktogf, pktype, vftovp, vptovf, gftodvi, - gftopk, gftype, patgen, pltotf, tftopl, pooltype, - tangle, weave, dvips tex.lib.d.T.Z - tex.pool and format files for tex, latex etc for the - above binaries mf.lib.d.T.Z - metafont lib files for the above binaries mfnoX.T.Z - metafont binaries without X support Source - source files for building TeX/MF. Includes: web.tar.Z - web sources for TeX/MF/BibTeX etc web2c.tar.Z - web2c sources for TeX/MF/BibTeX etc texmf.diff.T.Z - patch for the above 2 files for installation under linux The most efficient use (from the point of view of disk space) is to start without any pk files and let dvips create them as required. This is initially a little time consuming but eventually you will have all the pk files for fonts that you normally use (generally much less than a full LaTeX distribution). INSTALLATION: The files described above (except those in OLD and source) have been tarred relative to /usr/local rather than / as in the old version. This means that they may be installed in /usr or /usr/local (according to your preference) by cd'ing to the appropriate directory and untarring. (Hopefully this will amelorate the discussion about where they should go). IF they are installed in a directory other than /usr/local then it will be necessary to set the various environment variables (described in the man pages) to reflect their location so that the various binaries can find them. Also references in some man pages to the whereabouts of various files may need to be amended.
